The Pros and Cons of a Paleo Diet

Giving up grains completely is quite daunting to most. In fact, many of you may already know someone who does the Paleo Diet and have a hard time staying on track with their eating plan.

Before you dive in head first, let’s take a closer look at the pros and cons of the Paleo Diet, so you can be the judge if it’s right for your body and lifestyle.

PROS:

The main choices of food in a Paleo Diet are meat, fish, poultry, fruits, non-starchy veggies (no corn), nuts, sweet potatoes and coconut oil allowing your sugar intake to be naturally low. Because your main source of food is meat, you are encouraged to only consume humanely raised, or grass-fed meat.

When on the Paleo Diet you are not consuming grains, allowing your cravings and dependence on carbohydrates to diminish. But, what most may struggle with is giving up the snack foods! No worries though, this allows for plenty of munching on healthy vegetables!

CONS:

While you may lose weight, because of the diet’s restrictions it is hard to keep the weight off over a period of time. Weight is easily gained when you eat any of the “off-limits” foods. There have not been any significant studies on maintaining weight loss while on the Paleo Diet.

While you may not want to commit completely to the Paleo Diet, it does initiate great healthy habits, such as eating plenty of fruits and vegetables. As always, you’re the best judge of your body, and doing plenty of research before doing any diet is suggested.
